Scheduling a poem for later

Overview

Scheduling lets you write a poem now and have GS Poetry publish it for you later, automatically, at a date and time you choose. It’s useful for stacking a week’s worth of poems in one sitting, lining up a release to coincide with a real-world moment, or simply not wanting to be the one staring at a clock at 9:00 a.m. on a Tuesday.

Everything you’d normally do at publish time — title, categories, poetic form, banner, content warnings — is set when you schedule. At the scheduled moment, your poem goes live exactly as if you’d clicked Publish yourself.

What you’ll need

• An active GS Pro subscription. If yours lapses after a poem is already scheduled, that poem still publishes on time — you just won’t be able to schedule new ones until you resubscribe.
• A poem ready to go: text, title, at least one category, and any banner / content-warning settings you want at publish time.
• A future date and time at least 5 minutes from now and no more than 1 year out.
• Public visibility. Scheduled poems must be Public — the composer locks visibility to Public the moment you open the Schedule picker. Followers-only and Private aren’t supported for scheduling (a private poem only you can see has nothing to schedule; a followers-only auto-publish defeats the point of timing a release). If you want a Followers-only or Private poem, publish it directly instead of scheduling it.

Step-by-step

Schedule a new poem

1. Go to Compose a Poem from the global header or your poems tab on your profile. Write your poem and fill in title, categories, banner, and any other settings the way you would for a normal publish.
2. At the bottom of the composer, click/tap the blue Schedule for Later button (between Save Draft and Cancel).
3. The schedule panel opens directly beneath the action buttons. Pick the date and time you want the poem to go live. The picker defaults to one hour from right now in your local timezone, accepts one-minute precision, and shows your timezone next to the time so there’s no ambiguity. When you’re done picking your date and time, click/tap Done.
4. Visibility automatically snaps to Public when the picker opens, and the visibility dropdown locks to Public-only while it’s open. If you change your mind and want a non-public poem, click/tap Cancel Scheduling on the Schedule button to close the picker — the dropdown unlocks and you can publish or save as draft normally.
5. Click/tap Schedule Poem. You’ll see a confirmation toast and be taken to your Scheduled queue (under My Poems), where the new row carries a small blue clock badge and the exact date/time it will publish.

Schedule a poem you’ve already saved as a draft

1. Open My Poems → Drafts and click/tap the draft you want to schedule.
2. Make any final edits in the composer.
3. Click/tap Schedule at the bottom of the page and pick a date and time, the same way you would for a new poem.

View and manage what’s scheduled

Your scheduled poems live in My Poems → Scheduled (located in the status drop-down above your poems table). The Scheduled view shows four columns — Poem Title, Schedule Date, Category, and Visibility — plus three per-row action icons on the right. Read, like, and comment counts aren’t shown here because the poem hasn’t published yet (it has none of those signals). Each row gets a small blue clock badge next to its title so it’s visually distinct from regular drafts.

The three action icons are:

• Publish Now (paper-plane icon) — skip the wait and publish immediately. Same effect as opening the poem and clicking Publish. The row leaves the Scheduled queue and lands on your profile and in your followers’ streams right away.
• Reschedule (calendar-clock icon) — opens the poem in the composer so you can pick a new date/time. Use this any time you need to push the release later or move it sooner.
• Move back to drafts (document icon) — cancel the schedule without losing the poem. It returns to your Drafts list with all its settings intact.

You can also open a scheduled poem in the composer to edit the text or details. It stays scheduled while you edit — you only lose the schedule if you explicitly move it back to drafts, or if you click/tap Publish (which publishes immediately and clears the schedule).

What happens at publish time

1. Every minute, GS Poetry checks for scheduled poems whose time has arrived and publishes them automatically. There’s nothing for you to do.
2. The poem appears on your profile, in your followers’ streams, in Discover, and in search exactly as if you’d clicked Publish yourself. Read counts start at zero.
3. You get an in-app notification confirming the publish with a link to the live poem. You can also opt in to a confirmation email under Settings → Notifications by switching the System group on for email.

If something goes wrong

• “The Schedule button isn’t showing.” Confirm your GS Pro subscription is active under Settings → Membership. If it just lapsed, any poems you already scheduled stay scheduled and will publish on time — but the Schedule button won’t appear in the composer until you resubscribe.
• “Schedule Poem is grayed out.” The picker requires a time at least 5 minutes in the future and no more than 1 year out. If the picker is empty or shows a time outside that range, pick a new one and the button activates.
• “I can’t change visibility while the picker is open.” That’s by design — scheduled poems must be Public. Click/tap Cancel Scheduling to close the picker; the visibility dropdown will unlock and you can pick Followers-only or Private, then publish or save as draft normally.
• “I see ‘Scheduled time must be at least 5 minutes in the future’ under the picker.” The clock ticked past your chosen time while you were filling things in. Pick a new time at least 5 minutes ahead and click/tap Schedule Poem again.
• “My scheduled poem didn’t publish on time.” Publishing runs every minute, so a poem may land up to a minute after its scheduled time — that’s expected. If more than a few minutes have passed and it’s still showing as Scheduled, refresh the My Poems → Scheduled page. If it’s still stuck, contact support.
• “I edited a scheduled poem — did I lose my schedule?” No. Edits to a scheduled poem don’t cancel the schedule. Only Move back to drafts or Publish (which publishes immediately) does that.
• “My subscription lapsed. What happens to my queue?” Already-scheduled poems still publish on time. You won’t be able to schedule new ones or reschedule existing ones until you resubscribe — but Publish Now and Move back to drafts stay available on the existing queue, so you’re never stuck.
