Poetic Forms

A narrative poem, often set to music, that tells a story of love, loss, heroism, or tragedy. Rooted in oral tradition, ballads carry the rhythm of songs people have sung for centuries.

A lyric poem expressing grief, dissatisfaction, or protest, the poet's voice raised against injustice, unrequited love, or the state of the world. An ancient form that gives shape to discontent.

A poem of mourning and reflection, written to honor the dead or to meditate on loss. Elegies move from grief toward consolation, finding beauty in the act of remembrance.

A long, sweeping narrative poem that chronicles heroic deeds, mythic journeys, and the fate of nations. The grandest of forms, where a single story contains an entire world.

A brief, witty, and often satirical poem that delivers a sharp observation or punchline in just a few lines. Small in size, enormous in impact.

A short poem inscribed on a tombstone or written as if it were, a final word, a condensed life, a message left for those who come after.

Poetry liberated from fixed meter and rhyme. Free verse follows the natural rhythms of speech and thought, giving the poet complete freedom to shape each line by instinct and ear.

A Japanese form of three lines (5-7-5 syllables) that captures a single moment in nature or human experience. Haiku teaches us that less is more, that a whole world fits in seventeen syllables.

A song of praise or devotion, often spiritual in nature. Hymns celebrate the sacred, the transcendent, and the communal act of lifting voices together.

A five-line poem shaped like a Japanese lantern, with a syllable pattern of 1-2-3-4-1. A tiny, luminous form that glows with compressed meaning.

A five-line humorous poem with an AABBA rhyme scheme and a bouncing rhythm. Limericks are playful, irreverent, and often delightfully absurd.

A short poem expressing personal emotions or feelings, often with a musical quality. The lyric is poetry at its most intimate, one voice, one moment, one truth.

A poem of a single line. The ultimate exercise in compression, every word must carry the weight of an entire poem. Nothing wasted, nothing hidden.

An elaborate lyric poem addressing a person, place, thing, or idea with elevated language and deep feeling. Odes celebrate their subjects with passionate intensity.

Poetry that idealizes rural life, nature, and the simplicity of the countryside. Pastorals offer a vision of harmony between humans and the natural world.

A poem that exalts, honors, and celebrates, whether a person, a place, an idea, or the act of being alive. Praise poems are acts of gratitude made musical.

Poetry written in paragraph form without line breaks, blending the intensity of verse with the flow of prose. A hybrid form that proves poetry lives in language, not just in shape.

Similar to haiku in structure (5-7-5 syllables) but focused on human nature, emotions, and social observation rather than nature. Senryu finds the poetic in the personal.

A complex 39-line poem built on six repeating end-words that rotate through six stanzas in a precise pattern. The sestina is an obsessive form, circling the same words until they reveal new meaning.

A 14-line poem in iambic pentameter, traditionally exploring love, beauty, mortality, or time. Whether Shakespearean or Petrarchan, the sonnet is poetry's most elegant container.

The raw transformation of ink into oxygen, where the poet's voice becomes the instrument and the rhythm of their breath provides the beat. Unlike traditional verse, these poems are built to be heard, felt, and witnessed in real-time.

A 19-line poem with two repeating refrains and an ABA rhyme scheme. The villanelle's obsessive repetition creates a hypnotic, incantatory effect, the same lines returning with deepening meaning.
